Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, and it is recommended that students have interpreting experience and are trained interpreters.
In this course, Dr. Teplin provides a detailed description with great clinical insight on each of the most common illnesses and disorders that are encountered in mental health. These include: depressive disorders, mood disorders, PTSD, OCD, anxiety disorders, dementia, delirium, and schizophrenia. He will also review the most common testing and treatments used in mental health.In addition, by means of case studies, this course offers the interpreter with an opportunity to enhance one’s insight regarding mental illness. These case studies will explore the possible fears, biases and other barriers that may prevent interpreters from conveying the message accurately. Also featured in this course are quizzes, glossaries and interactive role-plays.One of the most important components of this course is its performance-based activities. The course includes over 4 hours of exercises & recorded role-play practices. These performance-based activities were designed to help the healthcare interpreter improve their accuracy while using the consecutive and simultaneous modes. It is recommended that all students complete all activities under each module in order to get the most out of the course. The goal of the activities is to provide opportunities to integrate newly acquired knowledge into practical interpreting skills.
